S'il y a un un psychologue dans le service, vous pouvez le rencontrer par l'intermédiaire de l'équipe ou directement (voir le tableau des contacts ci-dessous).

S'il n'y a pas de psychologue dans le service, l'équipe contacte la psychologie de liaison qui intervient à la demande et en transversal sur l'ensemble du CHU (au sein des services où il n'y a pas de psychologue).

En France, le titre de psychologue est protégé. Pour être psychologue, il faut être détenteur d'un  Master 2 ou un DESS de psychologie. La formation théorique universitaire est accompagnée d'une mise en pratique à travers différents stages supervisés par des psychologues en poste.

La profession est régie par un code de déontologie adopté en mars 1996 et actualisé en février 2012 et septembre 2021 par les principales organisations professionnelles dont l'objectif est de protéger le public et les psychologues contre les mauvais usages de la psychologie et l'abus des méthodes qui se réclament de cette discipline sans y appartenir.

Les psychologues ont le devoir de continuer à se former tout au long de leur carrière, par exemple pour se spécialiser ou approfondir une méthode ou des fondements théoriques. Ils doivent également bénéficier d'une "supervision", c'est à dire avoir un échange interprofessionnel qui leur permet d'analyser leur pratique, individuellement ou en groupe.

Le métier de psychologue s'exerce dans les institutions publiques (centres hospitaliers, éducation nationale...) ou dans le milieu associatif (protection de l'enfance, centres de prévention divers...). Certains psychologues peuvent exercer en libéral.

Dans les institutions, notamment hospitalières, psychiatres et psychologues travaillent souvent dans les mêmes équipes. Le psychologue a une formation en sciences humaines, et est habilité à mener des psychothérapies. Le psychiatre a reçu une formation médicale et est médecin spécialisé en psychiatrie. Le psychologue ne délivre pas de traitement médicamenteux, seul le psychiatre est habilité à le faire.
